Signage

“New signs put Goostrey walkers on the right path” announced the local newspaper when new, oak, signposts were installed at the start of all Goostrey footpaths in September 1996.

These original signposts carried destination and distance information unlike the tatty, rusting, metal signs they replaced.

Funding for the original signs was secured by Goostrey Parish Council from the County Council’s “Parish Paths Partnership” and then handed on to the Goostrey Footpaths Group.

The Footpaths Group designed the signs, organised their manufacture from local Cheshire oak and installed them, completing the work in September 1996.

The signposts tell walkers what they want to know:

  • Where the path starts

  • Where it goes to

  • How far it is in miles.

Since installation there has been a continuous review of the signposts. Repairs have been undertaken together with new signposts where required.

To ensure consistency, the quality and design of the original signposts has been maintained. All of this work has been managed and undertaken by the Footpaths Group in conjunction with Cheshire East Council Public Rights of Way Unit. Despite rising costs the new signposts have been financed from Footpaths Group funds.
